The BOK Center Walking Dilemma

2008 July 11

Many Tulsans are concerned about parking at the BOK Center once it opens.  Mainly because people are scared of homeless people, drug dealers, muggers and walking for ten minutes.

Actually, homeless people, drug dealers and muggers are not the issue.  It’s walking for ten minutes.

Homeless people are not going to bother you.  They’re too tired and weak from not eating.

Drug dealers will focus on tour busses; it is The Eagles and Celine Dion, after all.  I’m not saying they’re druggies, but we are dealing with a 70s band and a 10-pound singer.

Forget about muggers.  It’s 2008 and no one uses cash anymore, which is also a great excuse when it comes to cookie-peddling Girl Scouts and Salvation Army Santas.

The issue is walking.

What kind of city do we live in that expects us to walk for ten minutes?  We’re not a city of hobos.  We’re also not a city of many sidewalks, which might explain our resistance to walking.

Probably not.

We don’t have that kind of time.  It’s ten minutes of our life we will never get back.  Our time is better spent driving in circles for hours to find a closer parking spot.

Plus, what negative effect will all these ten-minute walks have on muscle atrophy?

Even Wal-Mart provides carts for people that want to protect their muscle atrophy integrity.

If carbon monoxide weren’t a problem, more people would park in their living room to save time.  Does the city honestly expect winded Tulsans that can’t walk to the driveway, to walk to the BOK Center?

Don’t our leaders realize how much time is lost because of the breaks needed to walk from the living room to the driveway?

Our time is valuable, especially when it keeps us from walking.

Amen! It’s the same with the new Drillers Stadium. The report said that there is “plenty” of parking and that they also want to encourage “pedestrian traffic” down the Greenwood District. “Pedestrian Traffic!” Where the hell do these councilors think they live? Upscale far far away cities like Kansas City and Dallas? Is it too much to ask for an 18,000 seat arena to offer curbside parking? The main meeting place in my Suburb offers blocks and blocks of parking right in front of the store! If Wal-Mart can do it, why can’t Tulsa? I don’t really think those buildings nearby are really doing anything important anyways. I mean “Federal Court Building?” I’ve never heard of that branch of Wal-Mart so I don’t really care what they sell. Bottom line, I’m sick of our city government asking me to waste 5 minutes moving my fat ass from one block to another. It’s ludicrous! Now give me a cheeseburger, Simpsons reruns are on TV for the next hour!

BigDanthe Tulsan: Exactly, and don’t Wal-Marts house 18,000 shoppers at one time? It’s ludicrous.

The BoK is gamed for the tourist trade.
