Inconvenience Yourself Day?

February 25, 2010

You want me to do what? Is this really a holiday?

Yesterday was “Inconvenience Yourself Day,” a “holiday” that is celebrated the fourth Wednesday of February. Seriously, I am not making this up.

I wanted to do my weekly guest post yesterday; however the Irritated Tulsan would not let me. He thought it was “Inconvenience Others Day,” which I think he might celebrate everyday of the year? Anyhow, I might be a day late on this topic; nonetheless, I wanted to mention it so that all you might learn how far out of my way I went to celebrate this unknown holiday.

“Inconvenience Yourself Day is an opportunity to focus on inconveniencing ourselves instead of inconveniencing others. It is also a day to recognize and acknowledge those who inconvenience themselves for others.”

To celebrate the holiday I opted to inconvenience myself instead of others in my life. I typically do my best to start the day by having sex with my wife, since I did not want to inconvenience her, I just had sex with myself instead. After my morning shower, which I took by myself as to once again not inconvenience my wife, I dried myself off and got dressed without any assistance from my man servant Gunther. Since I was going out of my to not inconvenience Gunther, I thought I would pack my own lunch rather than having him do it for me.

One of the strangest parts of my day was when I drove myself to work, I gave my chauffeur Geoffry the morning off as to not inconvenience him. Once I made it to work I thought that I might actually do my job rather than have someone else do my work for me. After all, the company does pay me to do my job, I might as well do it for a change. I know what you are thinking, this “inconvenience yourself instead of others” thing sounds rather difficult.

On my way home from work I filled my vehicle up with fuel so as to not inconvenience Geoffrey later with such a laborious task. I felt as though I was getting the hang of this “Inconvenience Yourself Day,” however, deep down I was so glad that I did not have to do all of these things on my own each and every day. Just think about what a drag it would be if I had to be a responsible, considerate, self-reliant individual each and every day of my life. It was a good thing I was only sacrificing my usual conveniences for this one day.

Once I got home from work I had only one matter of business to do before I could bring an end to this holiday, I had to write this story for the Irritated Tulsan and submit it for his review. Yet again as to not inconvenience anyone else I wrote this myself. Typically, I have my four-year-old son or my cat Salem write this stuff for me so that I can then I take all of the credit.

I survived the holiday and have learned that so many things I do each day can be such an inconvenience not only to myself but to others as well.

Remember when you were a child and you asked, “why is there Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, but no Children’s Day?” They would respond, “Everyday is Children’s Day.” Well, for me, every is Inconvenience Others Day. Besides, I didn’t want to bump my cat post. How inconvenient that would’ve been for me.

Thanks for the laugh – making others laugh is one way to Inconvenience Yourself. Great sense of humor.

      Thats funny.

I love the concept of having an inconvenience yourself day. Its a way to open peoples eyes to their own behaviors or for some, the lack there of. Inconveniencing yourself strengthens the kindness in all of us. When you inconvenience yourself to those in need, you grow, they grow — its what I consider being “christian like” and its really simple. Any age level can do it. Any country, or nation can practice it. Accepting someone inconveniencing themselves for you graciously is giving them the gift back. It’s an opportunity to reach out side of your self, for a moment, and actually think, before yourself, of another.

So why didn’t the Irritated Tulsa inconvenience himself with a Friday blog for us????? Or is it because he inconvenienced himself on Wednesday so he didn’t need to do it today? :)
