I Didn’t Know that I Lived in the Ghetto…

March 4, 2010

Sometime ago I wrote a story about the best thing Tulsa has that Oklahoma City doesn’t. Today I am going to write about the worst thing that OKC has that I honestly don’t think Tulsa has, at least not to the same extent.

It seems like the parts of OKC that one might classify as the ghetto, slum, and welfare districts of town are growing larger with each passing year. I realize that every city has areas of town that they are not proud of or joke about. However, those areas in OKC seem to be out of control.

I personally feel that the neighborhood where I live is a nice area of town; it’s somewhere I am proud to call home. However, I have noticed with each passing year that there seems to be a veil of darkness and despair that is slowly closing in on my neighborhood. As it is, the public schools in my residential area are getting so bad that my wife and I are trying to determine if we can afford private school for our son.

Granted the educational situation in Oklahoma in general is not what it could or should be. However, when you see stories on the local news about assaults and vandalism occurring at the elementary school down the street, or that they have installed metal-detectors in the same elementary school as a means of protecting the other students and faculty, it does not send a very positive message about the school my son will be attending in just a couple of years.

I know there is the argument that people in the questionable parts of town do not desire to be there and if they could do better, they would. While there might be some truth to that, I think that misery loves company and many of the people don’t care and would rather live on government funded housing and other forms of “free-aid” that hard working tax payers contribute to. It seems as though there are so many people out there who are more than willing to take advantage of a flawed system.

What ever happened to showing pride in all that we do and being prideful of our home and property? I remember a time when a person would not think of letting their personal property or home fall in disrepair. However, anymore it seems as though so many view our society as “disposable” and that they just don’t care.

*Sorry for the depressing rant, I know most of you come here for a little humor. This is one of those subjects that have been on my mind for a few weeks now. I guess seeing gang graffiti on the stop sign three blocks down from where I live just made a rather big impression on me this morning.

Dallas and Houston are both very bad too, I think that’s the trade off for living in a city. As for the schools, yeah they are horrible. Maybe home schooling?

I try not to think about Dallas, that place is truly a ghetto location. As for home school it is a option I may have to consider.

At least OKC doesn’t have a “Chicken Hut”?

I do kind of miss the big-city convenience of living in Dallas, it was very convenient to be offered crack every time I walked out to my car.

There is actually a guy in my neighborhood who has a vinity plate on his SUV that reads MVSKOKE, I hope that he is bragging about working for Coca-Cola and not that he is a drug dealer.

seems as if a lot of people have taken the old axiom “there’s no life like low life ” to heart
