My Tasty Tulsa Adventure with the Irritated Tulsan

March 25, 2010

Scary neighborhood, totally awesome food!

As I mentioned in last week’s post, I met up with the Irritated Tulsan for some fun and adventure. When I got to IT’s house he told me that our first stop was for a late lunch at this great Mexican place he knows of called El Rio Verde. He warned me that it was in a scary looking neighborhood but assured me that once I tasted the food I would forget about any concerns I had of my car being stolen as we dined there.

He was right, it was a scary neighborhood. I was so glad that we drove there during the day, otherwise I would not have been able to see the homeless man that was screaming at us while waiting at the stop light.

On our way to El Rio Verde IT kept telling me about the wet burrito, personally I thought he was trying to talk dirty to my wife. Anyhow, once we made it to the restaurant and were handed our menus there was indeed a wet burrito, which came highly recommended by our server as well.

IT was also correct about the food being so good that I would forget about the part of Tulsa that it was located in. The food was the best Mexican food I have had in a very long time. Sadly it seems that all Mexican restaurants in OKC are part of some national chain.

After our meal we inquired about the possibility of getting a sopapilla, unfortunately they were out. Personally I think they were tired of the four loco gringos in corner booth and wanted us to leave. IT assured us that he knew of a place that would take care of our lingering sweet tooth.

The place that we went to for dessert just might be as close to heaven as I may ever get. It was so amazing! I also think I may have gained a pound or two just by walking in the door and seeing all of the incredible cookies, cakes and pastries that were available at Merritt’s Bakery. I have to say I am a little jealous that Tulsans have such an amazing bakery that they can go to for a sweet, delectable treat.

After nearly slipping into a diabetic coma from my lack of self control while sampling treats from Merritt’s Bakery, we decided to go see a movie. IT directed me to an AMC theater where we decided to watch Alice in Wonderland. I know this might sound a little odd, but when we walked into our assigned theater, I could not help but notice that the light sconces looked remarkably like giant nipples. I know you might think I am just some dirty minded guy for making such an observation; however my wife is the one who pointed it out. The theater was great, the movie was even better and the idea of freakishly giant nipples is still stuck in the back of my mind.

Once again I have to give a great big thank you to the Irritated Tulsan and his guest for being such great and entertaining company. I would also like to thank you for introducing us to some of the great treasures that Tulsa has to offer. Now I can’t wait for my next trip to Tulsa!

I thought about that too, don’t worry though, you are not the first guy to try and lure me in with a wet burrito.

I ate at El Rio Verde last night, and it was indeed delicious.

I’ve also been a little disappointed with their lack of desserts (other than rather nasty Mexican candy), so I generally go somewhere else immediately afterwards for dessert as well.

When I eat out, I try to eat local. Rio Verde is my favorite Mexican restaurant. Merrit’s is my favorite comfort food locale.

Where is El Rio Verde? I’ve lived in Tulsa my entire life (47 years) and never heard of it.

Love the wet burrito! @crunch-Frog it’s located at 38 N Trenton Ave, it’s north of I-244 and just west of Utica.

There is another walk-up shack called Mr. Taco just a north of I-244 and Lewis. It’s also good and the portions are often much larger than you expect. There are some tables outside but most people will not opt to hang out and eat.

I agree with Carol. But I always get Steak instead of Chicken.

If you stop at Mr. Taco try the King Burrito and Super Nachos. Those 2 will feed 4 people.

    It’s an order to-go place.

And I agree with all of you. El Rio Verde is great.
